Philadelphia Growth & National Footprint
In 2022, SmartLabs announced its expansion into Philadelphia, establishing a flagship presence in University City’s Gattuso-Drexel Life Sciences Building, one of the region’s largest science developments. The project connects academic research, biotech startups, and established therapeutics firms under one adaptive infrastructure.
Trade and industry media captured how the company’s model—already validated in Boston and the Bay Area—was now being used to redefine how universities and private developers collaborate. The Philadelphia expansion introduced modular R&D suites, pilot-scale process rooms, and shared scientific services designed to remove logistical barriers from discovery to production.
The site is the first SmartLabs facility to sit at the center of a major academic innovation district, forming a blueprint for regionalized ecosystems that link discovery, commercialization, and workforce development.
